Minimum Qualifications
Acceptable Experience and Education
High School Diploma or GED along with one year of college or vocational school education in office skills, computer or closely related field, and two (2) years related experience.
Or, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Typical Duties
Essential Duties
Records verbatim court proceedings using electronic sound recording equipment. Play back proceedings as required.
Ensures in advance that electronic sound recording equipment is in working order and notify information technology staff regarding needed maintenance and/or repairs.
Setups and arranges equipment in the courtroom.
Annotates digitally recorded court proceedings while the proceedings occur.
Creates electronic log notes of proceedings and participants involved in court proceedings.
Reviews transcripts submitted by agencies to ensure they meet the court’s and appellate court’s format standards.
Prepares electronic record for transcription. Arranges for and monitor the timely and accurate progress of the transcripts being received from the transcriber and delivered to the appropriate parties.
Receives and processes duplication and transcript production orders.
Catalogs data media (Drives, DVD/CD/tapes, etc.) and log and maintain their proper storage.
Is responsible for proper archiving and accessing of an electronic copy of a court proceeding.
Inventories and controls electronic sound recording equipment and submit requests for needed supplies.
Assists the in in-court duties, such as handling exhibits and calling the court’s docket.
Operates a variety of office equipment.
Attends and participates in meetings, training, and information sessions.
Stays abreast of new trends, statutes, laws, and innovations in the field.
Commits self to providing excellent customer service and demonstrate commitment through cooperative team and individual efforts.
Creates a high-quality work culture through participation in and emphasis on training and mentoring to develop leadership, management, and technical skills in self and all employees, including safety related training and skills.
Other Important Duties*
Be available for work beyond standard workday or workweek hours as necessary.
Knowledge and compliance with the Texas Code of Judicial Conduct as it applies to judicial employees and with court confidentiality requirements. Ability to consistently demonstrate sound ethics and judgment.
As members of the County of El Paso Emergency Response System, all El Paso County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to train on emergency response and/or perform certain emergency services at the direction of their supervisor.
Job Summary
Summary of Position
The Digital Court Recorder Operator has responsibility for the accurate and appropriate verbatim recording of court proceedings in the courtroom through the use and operation of electronic sound recording equipment. The incumbent provides basic courtroom and office assistance to the judge, court personnel, attorneys, and litigants. The position works under direct supervision according to set procedures.

Minimum Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Court operations and the local court reporter plan as they pertain to the electronic recording of verbatim testimony in the courtroom.
- Procedures for transcript requests and processing and providing transcripts of court proceedings.
- Basic legal documents (ie. Pleadings, orders, transcripts, etc.).
- Demonstrate skill in keeping accurate computerized notes/logs of sworn testimony. Skill in the use of electronic sound recording equipment and recording court proceedings electronically.
- Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in wiring) to individuals and groups to provide information and answer procedural questions without providing legal advice. Excellent communication skills; accurate use of the English language, grammar, punctuation and spelling
- Ability to interact effectively and appropriately with the public providing customer service and resolving difficulties while complying with regulations, rules and procedures.
- Knowledge of office practices and procedures; methods and computer equipment to include Windows and Microsoft based products.
- Work expeditiously and accurately under pressure with high volume of work. Detailed oriented; multi-task and capable of prioritizing tasks assigned.
- Operate personal computer using standard office operating software and general office equipment.
- Perform clerical tasks, such as maintaining logbooks and weekly reports.
- Work in a team environment and have a ‘can-do’ attitude is essential for success in this position; be dependable; work under stressful conditions and establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
