Minimum Qualifications
Acceptable Experience and Education
High school graduation, or its equivalent, and at least three (3) years of experience in automotive, diesel, or heavy equipment repair;
Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certificates and Licenses Required
Must have or obtain by date of hire a Texas Class A or class B commercial driver’s license applicable to job responsibilities, with a driving record acceptable to the County of El Paso.
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certificates in automotive repair preferred.
May require other certification in a specific trade as needed.
Subject to federal drug and local drug and alcohol testing regulations, which include pre-employment, post accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return to duty and follow-up testing.
Typical Duties
Essential Duties
Performs preventive and scheduled maintenance on vehicles and equipment, to include oil changes, battery checks, repairing and replacing tires and tubes, tire and lubrication checks; replaces oil and air filters; washes and cleans vehicles; repairs electrical and air conditioning systems;
Repairs drive trains, including engine overhauls, transmission rebuilds, and clutch replacement;
Repairs and maintains vehicle air conditioning units and cooling systems, including radiators, compressors, water pumps, thermostats, belts, etc.;
Troubleshoots and repairs vehicle ignition and electrical systems, including wiring, solenoid relays, alternators, etc;
Repairs and maintains braking systems, including master cylinders, rotors, brake pads, drums, etc;
Repairs and maintains vehicle fuel systems, including fuel pumps, fuel filters, fuel lines, fuel gages and fuel injectors;
Performs vehicle suspension repairs and tire balancing;
Tests vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation by using various test equipment and tools;
Overhauls, tears down, rebuilds, repairs and maintains gasoline engines; overhauls and repairs small gasoline engines;
Orders and picks up parts and supplies, as directed;
Repairs and maintains diesel engines and related equipment;
Performs field repairs on various vehicles and equipment;
Overhauls hydraulic and air brake systems; repairs engine cooling systems, transmissions, axles, electrical systems and HVAC systems;
Replaces and adjusts shock absorbers and suspension systems; makes necessary adjustments to gasoline and diesel components; road tests equipment as needed;
Cleans and maintains tools, diagnostic equipment, and garage;
Transports vehicles using towing units;
Fills out work orders;
Performs body work, welding, and fabrication work;
Maintains a safe work area and environment;
Substitutes, if assigned, during temporary absences by performing delegated duties sufficient to maintain continuity of normal operations;
Commits self to providing excellent customer service and demonstrate commitment through cooperative team and individual efforts; and
Creates a high quality work culture through participation in and emphasis on training and mentoring to develop leadership, management, and technical skills in self and all employees, including safety related training and skills.
Other Important Duties*
Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
As members of the County of El Paso Emergency Response System, all El Paso County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to train on emergency response and/or perform certain emergency services at the direction of their supervisor.
Job Summary
The Fleet Mechanic, under direct supervision of the Fleet Mechanic Foreman, performs preventive and corrective maintenance on County’s fleet, including performing engine rebuilds and repairs of hydraulic, electrical, cooling, and fuel systems, drive trains, body work, etc.

Minimum Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of: mechanical process and techniques used in the inspection, repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel automotive equipment and construction machinery; engine repair and overhaul; safety procedures; HVAC systems; the construction, operation, and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty motorized equipment; hydraulic and electrical equipment; diagnostic equipment and software; various tools related to job performance. Skill/Ability to: read and understand automotive repair and installation manuals; operate diagnostic equipment; troubleshoot, diagnose and repair equipment with accuracy and speed; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and superiors; perform overhauls; use hand tools, power tools, and precision instruments related to job performance; apply proper and applicable safety practices, procedures, and regulations; diagnose problems and determine appropriate service or repair; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Pass a Criminal Background Investigation;
