Summary
Performs professional level duties to assist library patrons and maintain library collection of materials.
Essential Functions
- Answer questions from library patrons; assist in locating materials; and instruct patrons in the effective use of library equipment and resources;
- Assist paraprofessional and clerical staff in circulation as needed;
- Select, order and maintain records of money spent for materials;
- Review current literature of library and publishing companies to keep abreast of available materials, programs, and library procedures;
- Plan and conduct programs for children and adults;
- May supervise library support staff;
- Participates in ongoing professional development to keep abreast of new trends and developments;
- Must work some evenings and weekends as a regular part of a rotating schedule.
- Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications
Completion of a master degree in library science, or ability to complete degree requirements within six months, or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following:
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of library science;
- Computer applications related to library functions.
- Dewey Decimal System, OCLC,
Ability to:
- Effectively provide customer service to library patrons;
- Evaluate library materials;
- Develop and implement library programs;
- Operate computer and software;
- Display flexibility when new types of materials or methodology or software become available;
Physical Requirements
- Occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds;
- Frequently walk and stand during a shift;
- Occasionally kneel;
- Frequently push and pull objects;
- Frequently rotate upper trunk to the right or left while sitting or standing;
- Reach above, at or below shoulder height;
- Frequently handle objects;
- Frequently crouch or stoop.
